Ninilchik has world class salmon and halibut fishing, as well as outstanding razor clam digging during minus tides. There is also access to the beach for beach combing, fishing and family picnics. Beyond fishing, the unobstructed views of Mt. Iliamna and Mt. Redoubt, both active volcanoes, can be excellent on clear days. Tides for Deep Creek Alaska, also known as Cape Ninilchik, can be corrected from the tables supplied by subtracting 1 minute from the times shown.

Deep Creek & Ninilchik Fishing Tides for 2009

One important part of a successful fishing trip is the degree of change that occurs from the daily high tides to the low tides that causes some strong currents the fishermen must deal with. During a halibut fishing trip, fishing is more productive when there is a small swing in tides resulting from the least difference between the mean high tides and the mean low tides. Although halibut are caught during all forms of tide shifts, this is the most preferable scenario.

• Deep Creek, Anchor and Ninilchik Rivers will open to king salmon fishing Memorial Day weekend 3-day fishery. In addition, the Anchor River will be open to fishing on Wednesdays through June 18.
• The annual limit of the king salmon that may be taken from the Anchor River was increased to five per year in combination with most other Cook Inlet tributaries. The annual limit for king salmon from Deep Creek remains 2 per year.
• The marine waters closed from April 1 to June 30 at the mouth of the Anchor River were reduced from 2 miles north and south of the river, to 1 mile north and south of the river mouth. The offshore boundary remains at 1 mile from shore.

Those partaking in the enjoyment of razor clam digging in Ninilchik also need to confirm the current tides before heading to the beaches. Here is where you want to see a large swing from the highs to lows resulting in what is referred to as the minus tides that the clam digger needs where the sea level recedes beyond the mean low tide mark.
